         THIS SUMMER, I  ALONG WITH MY FAMILY(WIFE AND FOUR CHILDREN) WENT TO MARGHAZAR VALLEY SWAT TO SEE THE WHITE PALACE,ABOUT  14 KM FROM SAIDU SHARIF.THE MANAGER NAVEED AWAN EXTENDED SPLENDID HOSPITALITY AND SHOWED US THE WHITE PALACE IN DETAIL. WE REMAINED THERE FOR ABOUT 4 HOURS.WHEN WE WERE READY TO DEPART FOR SAIDU SHARIF,MR NAVEED AWAN CAME UP WITH AN IDEA AND DISCLOSED THAT ON WAY BACK TO SAIDHU SHARIF, YOU WILL FIND A VILLAGE SAPPAL BANDI, A FEW KILOMETRES OFF SIDE THE MAIN ROAD.THERE IS A HOLY STONE CONTAINING NATURALLY PRINTED WORD “MOHAMMAD”PBUH. HE NARRATED A TRADITION :" A DECADE AGO ,A VILLAGER OF SAPPAL BANDI WAS CUTTING A STONE TO BUILD HIS HOME.SUDDENLY THE BIG STONE RIPPED APART  INTO TWO PIECES , VERY SIMILAR TO ICE BLOCK SPLITTING THAT WE OFTEN OBSERVE  ON ICE- SELLING SHOP.ONE BIG CHUNK OF STONE ROLLED DOWN THE HILLS INTO THE DITCHES WHILE THE OTHER PART REMAINED STEADY ON ITS PLACE.WHEN THE VILLAGER SAW THE PIECE, HE WAS ASTONISHED TO SEE THE NAME OF "MOHAMMAD" PBUH NATURALLY  INSCRIBED ON THE STONE. THE BOLSTER (A CHISEL) FELL DOWN FROM HIS HAND IN TRANCE AND HE SAT DOWN IN FRONT OF THE STONE IN DEEP REVERENCE."

       ON HEARING THE PRESENCE OF THIS SPIRITUAL STONE ,WE ALL MADE UP OUR MINDS TO SEE IT.WE ALL SAT IN BLUE CULTUS AND STARTED MOVING TOWARDS SAIDU SHARIF,WHEN WE REACHED ALMOST MIDWAY_7 KM FROM WHITE PALACE AND 7 KM AWAY FROM SAIDU SHARIF_A NARROW METALED ROAD EMANATED FROM THE MAIN ROAD.WE ASKED AN OLD MAN, SITTING ON THE ROAD SIDE, ABOUT THE HOLY STONE.HE GUIDED US TO FOLLOW THE NARROW ROAD AND THAT WOULD TAKE YOU TO YOUR COVETED DESTINATION.WE TURNED THE BLUE VEHICLE ON THAT ROAD.THE ROAD WAS METALED ,NEWLY MADE BUT HAD CERTAIN STEEP HEIGHTS.AFTER TRAVELING ABOUT 7 KILOMETERS CURLY,STEEPLY ,UP AND DOWN TRACK,WE REACHED A POINT WHERE A SMALL SQUARE ROOM WAS CLEARLY VISIBLE  ON THE FRONT MOUNTAIN.NOW WE HAD TO TRAVEL REMAINING JOURNEY ON FOOT.AFTER PARKING THE BLUE CAR AND TAKING TRAVELING KIT BAG,WE BECAME TRACKERS AND STARTED OUR JOURNEY ON FOOTS.

         AFTER 10 TO 15 MINUTES WALK,WE REACHED OUR DESTINATION.THERE WAS A SMALL ROOM,PAINTED WHITE.ON THE DOOR,A 75 YEARS OLD SENTRY SAIF UR REHMAN WELCOMED US AND ALLOWED US TO SEE THE HOLY STONE.WE ENTERED THE ROOM AND SAW 5 FEET LONG AND 5 FEET WIDE GREY STONE HAVING A DIVINE ENGRAVING OF WORD "MOHAMMAD" PBUH.WE ALL WENT INTO ECSTASY AND STARTED SAYING SUBHAN ALLAH, ALHAMADULILLAH,SOME EVEN STARTED RECITING DAROOD(EULOGY OF THE PROPHET).SAIF UR REHMAN TOLD US A DIFFERENT STORY ABOUT ITS DISCOVERY.HE SAID, “IN 2000,A WOOD CUTTER BOY WAS CUTTING WOODS(KHUSHAK IN PUSHTO) FOR BURNING.AS A RESULT,THIS STONE WAS UNCOVERED .INCIDENTALLY,AN OLD MAN WAS PASSING BY,HE SAT NEAR STONE TO TAKE A REST.SUDDENLY, HE SAW THE ENGRAVING OF THE WORD "MOHAMMAD"PBUH ON THE STONE AND STOOD UP IN A JIFFY UNDER A SPELL AND DEEPLY IMPRESSED .HE TOLD THE OTHER VILLAGERS ABOUT THIS MIRACULOUS STONE.SOON,A LARGE NUMBER OF PEOPLE GATHERED TO SEE THE HOLY STONE.LATER, IT BECAME A ROUTINE PRACTICE AND PEOPLE STARTED VISITING THE PLACE REGULARLY IN ORDER TO SEE THE HEAVENLY STONE.ON SEEING THE RUSH OF PEOPLE,THE MOTHER OF THE WOOD CUTTER FINANCED THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE ROOM FOR THE SACRED STONE AND THE VILLAGERS EMPLOYED A PERSON SAIF UR REHMAN AS A GUARD."

        ON SEEING THE STONE, THE HADITH(QUDSI) OF THE HOLY PROPHET PBUH  FLASHED IN MY MIND, LO LA KA LAMA KHALIQ TUL AFLAK.“IF I(GOD)  HAD NOT GIVEN BIRTH TO YOU(THE HOLY PROPHET PBUH) , I WOULD HAVE NOT CREATED THIS UNIVERSE .” PONDER AT THE MAGNIFICENCE , GRANDEUR AND SPLENDOUR OF OUR PROPHET PBUH AS MILLIONS OF PEOPLES HAVE BEEN RECITING DAROOD ROUND THE CLOCK,ROUND THE WORLD WITHOUT ANY PAUSE SINCE HIS BIRTH... AND WILL KEEP ON DOING SO TILL THE DAY OF JUDGEMENT.EVEN HIS NAME IS WRITTEN ON THE ROCKS,NUTS,FRUITS,ETC,_A DISTINCTION UN ATTAINED BY ANY BODY ELSE IN THIS UNIVERSE EXCEPT THE ALMIGHTY GOD.IN FACT,IT IS A MARK OF GOD'S SPECIAL LOVE FOR OUR PROPHET PBUH.  ON RETUNING TO SAIDU SHARIF,HAZARAT BABA BULLAY SHAH RA VERSE WAS HOVERING ON MY MIND;

TURKISH PRIME MINISTER RECEP TAYYIP ERDOGAN VISITED PAKISTAN ,ADDRESSED THE PARLIAMENT AND COUNSELED THE OPPOSITION " CRITICIZE SITTING GOVERNMENT INSTEAD OF ATTEMPTING TO TOPPLE IT",THIS ADVICE SOUNDS CIVILIZED AND DEMOCRATIC, BUT REALITY LIES SOME WHERE ELSE.IN CIVILIZED NATIONS, WHENEVER, A PUBLIC OFFICE HOLDER IS CHARGED WITH ANY MORAL TURPITUDE, HE DEPARTS IN A JIFFY, IRRESPECTIVE OF THE FACT , HE IS GUILTY OR NOT.THIS IS CALLED DECORUM OF THE PUBLIC OFFICE,THE PRIME MINISTER SHOULD HAVE ADVISED US IN THIS CONTEXT.TURKEY HAS 100%  LITERACY RATE, WE ARE STAGGERING AT 57.7%. TURKEY ACCOMPLISHED IT IN RECENT YEARS BY IMPARTING COMPULSORY EDUCATION UP TO 12 YEAR BY LAW.THE PRIME MINISTER SHOULD HAVE ADVISED US IN THIS CONTEXT.WE HAVE MULTILINGUAL,MANY CURRICULA AND SOCIALLY DISCRIMINATED EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM.WHEREAS, TURKEY HAS SOLE LANGUAGE I.E.TURKISH EVEN FOR SCIENCE SUBJECTS,ONE CURRICULUM FOR ALL AND SOCIALLY EQUITABLE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM,THE PRIME MINISTER SHOULD HAVE ADVISED US IN THIS CONTEXT.

       TURKEY IS MISTAKENLY CONSIDERED AS SECULAR STATE,IN REAL,IT IS LIBERAL,EDUCATED ISLAMIC STATE,HAVING NO PREJUDICE ON THE BASIS OF RELIGION WHERE EVEN IMMAMS(ONE WHO LEADS CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER) ARE UNIVERSITY GRADUATES,THE COUNTRY IS TEEMING WITH THOUSANDS OF PHD IN RELIGION.THE MOAZINS OF DIFFERENT MOSQUES DELIVER SYNCHRONIZED AZANS(CALL FOR CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER).HERE IMAMS ARE NOT HIGHLY EDUCATED,MOST PEOPLE PREFER TO GO FOR STUDIES OTHER THAN RELIGION AND WE LISTEN OVERLAPPING AZANS FOR ABOUT HALF AN HOUR FOR SAME PRAYER.TWO MOSQUES OF EVEN SAME LOCALITY HAVE DIFFERENT TIMINGS OF AZAN FOR THE SAME PRAYER.WE LACK RELIGIOUS HARMONY WHICH IS THE HALLMARK OF TURKEY.THE PRIME MINISTER SHOULD HAVE ADVISED US IN THIS CONTEXT.

    THE MILITARY INTERVENTION IN TURKEY WAS AS FREQUENT AS WE HAD.ARDOGAN HAS BLOCKED THEIR WAY BY MAKING AMENDMENT IN THE CONSTITUTION.PRIOR TO THIS,HE HAD UNDERGONE A HECTIC DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM  WHICH PUT TURKEY ON THE TRACK OF PROGRESS THUS ACHIEVED PROSPERITY AND ECONOMIC WELL BEING OF ITS MASSES.HE DID NOT RUSHED TO THIS  COVETED GOAL OF DEMOCRACY TO KEEP MILITARY AT BAY RATHER,  SAGACITY PREVAILED IN HIS ACTION.THE PRIME MINISTER SHOULD HAVE ADVISED US IN THIS CONTEXT.

     WE ARE FACING 20 HOURS LOAD SHEDDING IN THESE HOT FURIOUS SUMMERS,COLOSSAL CORRUPTION, REGULAR  INDISCRIMINATE KILLING, DEPLORABLE POVERTY,SECTARIAN TENSION,EDUCATIONAL BACKWARDNESS,INDUSTRIAL SICKNESS,AGRICULTURAL DECAY--ALMOST AN ECONOMIC CRUNCH.TO ALL THESE PROBLEMS ,THE SITTING GOVERNMENT HAS NO PLANS, NO ACTIONS EVEN NO INTENTIONS TO REDRESS THEM.THE OPPOSITION HAS BEEN CRITICIZING SINCE FOUR YEARS BUT WITH NO AVAIL.EVEN IT TOOK THE BLAME OF "FRIENDLY OPPOSITION"IN RECENT PAST,SWITCHED TO THE  NEW GEAR AND IS LOOKING LIKE A GENUINE OPPOSITION.FURTHER, FROM THE JUDICIARY REHABILITATION MOVEMENT, WE LEARN THE FACT THAT PEOPLE HAVE TO COME TO STREETS TO MEET THEIR DEMANDS .NOW THE OPPOSITION IS DOING WHAT CAN BE FRUITFUL AFTER DEPARTING FROM FRUITLESS LIP SERVICE.THE WORTHY TURKISH PRIME MINISTER IS PROBABLY NOT ACQUAINTED WITH INTRICATE PSYCHOLOGY OF OUR RULERS BASED ON THE PUNJABI MAXIM:"BACHA NA ROAY TAY MAAN WI DUDH NAHI DENDI"

TRADITIONAL REMEDIES TO WARD OFF DENGUE THREAT DISCUSSED

A SEMINAR ON DENGUE CONTROL,UNDER CHIEF MINISTER'S ANTI DENGUE CAMPAIGN 2012, WAS HELD AT NEW CAMPUS M.Sc.PHYSICS BLOCK OF GOVT T.I.COLLEGE CHENABNAGAR THE OTHER DAY.PROF WAQAR HUSSAIN DELIVERED A LECTURE ON CONTROL OF DENGUE BY KILLING MOSQUITO WITHOUT SPENDING MONEY.HE SAID MOST POPULATION RESIDES IN RURAL AREA WITH LOW INCOME.AND ALL THE MEASURES TO CONTAIN MOSQUITO REQUIRE MONEY .PROF WAQAR HUSSAIN STATED THAT EUCALYPTUS LEAVES HAVE MOSQUITO REPELLENT INGREDIENTS SO VILLAGER CAN RUB TWO OR THREE LEAVES ON EXPOSED PARTS OF THEIR BODIES KEEPING EYES SAFE.SECONDLY, HE SAID THAT ALL KINDS OF"SMOKES" WARD OFF MOSQUITO.PATHIAN, COWS DUNG ACCUMULATED AND DRIED IN CAKE FORMS, BURN AND PRODUCE SMOKE WHICH IRRITATE MOSQUITO TO AN EXTENT  COMPELLING THEM TO FLEE .THIS ANTI MOSQUITO  REMEDY WAS PRACTICED DURING REIGN OF JAHANGIR WHEN DENGUE TYPE EPIDEMIC SPREAD IN 1616. IF GUGAL,HERMAL,LUBAN OR AJWAIN(ALL AVAILABLE ON GROCERY SHOPS )ARE SPRINKLED ON SEMI BURNING PATHIES,THE SMELL OF SMOKES BECOME OBNOXIOUS FOR MOSQUITO.THIRDLY,HE ADVISED TO TAKE BATH AFTER SWEATING WORK AS MOSQUITO ARE GIFTED WITH SPECIAL OLFACTORY SYSTEM FOR SNIFFING OUT BLOOD SOURCES.OF 72 OF ODOR RECEPTOR ON ITS ANTENNAE,AT LEAST 27 ARE TUNED TO DETECT CHEMICALS FOUND IN PERSPIRATION.SO, SWEAT LESS  BODIES ARE LESS SUSCEPTIBLE TO MOSQUITO ATTACK.

WE AND WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY

           Since 1987, May 31^st is observed all around the world as World No Tobacco Day .The prime objective of the day is abstinence from all types of tobacco use. It is also meant to draw worldwide attention about the hazardous health effects of tobacco. This year’s theme is ‘tobacco industry interference’ with a purpose to expose and counter tobacco industry’s brazen and offensive attempts to undermine the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. Tobacco is mostly used in the shape of cigarette apart from other forms like gutka, green niswar, red niswar, betel nut, beri, cigar, hubble bubble, sheesha,etc.Tobacco causes cancer, heart disease and many other ailments, making it second major cause of death worldwide and about 56% of smokers are at the risk of premature death.

            Last century, tobacco epidemic killed 100 million people worldwide. Tobacco is one of the leading preventable causes of death. About 6 million people die annually including 0.6 million second hand smokers. According to WHO, global tobacco epidemic by 2030, there will be more than 8 million death every year unless urgent action is taken.

            THE NATIONAL HEALTH SURVEY OF PAKISTAN SAYS THERE ARE 30 MILLION(25% ARE FEMALES) SMOKERS IN PAKISTAN WITH HALF OF THEM FALLING IN AGE BRACKET OF 25 TO 44.AND I LAKH PEOPLE DIE EVERY YEAR DUE TO TOBACCO USE.

            In Pakistan, smoking mostly leads to cancer of oral cavity, voice box, lungs and upper esophagus. Apart from these, tobacco smoke pollute the air by fine particles called PM^2.5.In non-smoking venues PM^2.5 value was 101ug/m²,in hotels and restaurants, it was 600 and in sheesha smoking place, it was 1745.whereas, WHO has marked the maximum limit of PM^2.5  up to 250ug/m².

              Lung cancer(40% of cancer of male is associated with tobacco) is the main cause of deaths followed by mouth cancer, cardiac arrest, pneumonia and many other maladies. Tobacco smoke contains nicotine (an alkaloid), carbon monoxide, carbon particles and many carcinogenic agents which not only harm smokers but also those around them. It is embarrassing that not only smokers but scores of non smokers die every year due to passive smoking so for the safety of non smokers, an ordinance “prohibition of smoking and protection of non smokers'' was promulgated in 2002.This law restricts public place smoking, checks ads and prohibits sale of cigarette to minor, below 18 year of age. Unfortunately this law is largely unimplemented and openly defied. For proper implementation of law, first public awareness campaign is required showing harmful effects of tobacco then strict observation of law is required.For instance, the Sind Assembly banned sheesha smoking at public places; people started buying for their houses. Sheesha was selling at Rs 500 after ban, it soured to Rs.1500 and astonishingly people are buying it happily.It shows people are to be educated first. Sheesha smoking has become very popular these days; it is more dangerous form of smoking. Dr Azhar Shafi rebuked that sheesha is very fatal for health as its taking for one hour is more injurious than the smoking of thousands of cigarettes.

           Smoking has been conditioned with glamour and mark a symbol of independence, maturity, performance enhancer and prosperity. In women, it is considered as a sign of liberty, gender equality, broad mindedness and modernism. Youth often fall a prey to smoking so awareness campaign should target the youth. A regular non smoking campaign on electronic and print media should be launched. The glamorous, heroic ads which "conditions" heroism with smoking should be banned. Celebrities, a role model of youth, should not only quit smoking but also convey anti smoking feelings. Still more, tobacco hazards should be a part of syllabus and regular anti smoking program should be conducted in educational institutions. Administration of school and colleges should ensure complete abstinence from smoking in their premises. Debates, essay competition, walks, souvenirs sale, display in educational institutions--all by the students to be conducted. T-shirts having anti smoking slogans like "Smoking is suicide”, “Smoke but don't exhale”, “Tobacco tarnishes teeth”, “Smoking sucks soul”, and etc. should be poured in market on nominal prices for the youths. Smoking should be portrayed as abominable act and should be condemned for its cosmetic effects. The younger people are conscious about their beauty and outlook and not about their health. It is a maxim; youth has no concept of death. Obnoxious smell, tarnished teeth, grey dried lips of smokers put an end to cosmetic display of a personality. Furthermore most of women and children dislike smoking.

          Marginalization of tobacco industry is another step to control smoking. At present, tobacco industry is producing 107000 tons of tobacco each year. Thus it contributes about Rs.36 billion to the coffer of national exchequer so this industry is a major source of revenue for the government and media. So it is feared that it might get some space for this fiscal aspect. Astonishingly, Tobacco industry has responded positively to mandatory printing of pictorial health warning on cigarette pack . Now a comprehensive ban on 10-stick pack should be a vital step in curtailing tobacco tendency in the youth as this mini pack is very popular among them. As said earlier youth should be the main target. According to the Nation, 15 billion smuggled and duty unpaid cigarettes are sold annually in Pakistan. This illicit trade not only causes loss to national exchequer but also undermine public health agenda as these tobacco product fail to comply with regulation issued by the Ministry of Health. Pakistan is 5th country in the world and 26th country in the world to introduce pictorial health warning on cigarette pack yet smoking is on the up in Pakistan whereas it is declining in the west. So, there is need to launch a massive anti tobacco campaign along with legislation to curtail this menace to a manageable level. Youth specific campaign is sure to meet coveted results.

                A Walk was held to mark the World Blood Donor Day 2012 in district Chiniot today.The Deputy Director Colleges Sarfraz Ahmed organized the Walk which started from Govt Islamia College Chiniot and terminated at DCO office.Principals,professors,non teaching staff and students of various colleges of district Chiniot attended the Walk,adorned with colourful posters and banners.

              Before Walk,the participants were briefed by Prof Waqar Hussain,focal person of Blood Donation Society of Govt T.I.College.He said that 14th June has been celebrated as Blood Donor Day since 2005 with a purpose to ensure the availability of safe blood and blood products for transfusion and to thanks voluntary unpaid blood donor for their life saving gift.14th June is the birthday of Karl Landsteiner,the creator of blood group system in 1900.He was later awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1930.Although Jan Jansky had classified blood into four groups but Landsteiner's discovery  had been accepted by the world scientists and Jansky's work was obscured.However,Jansky's classification is still in use in Russia and States of former USSR.

      This year theme is ;"every blood donor is hero" and thus everyone can become hero by donation blood.He said that these silent heroes lives in the hearts of 6.9 billion people ; their faces are blossoming on the face of time.as their sacrifice is deeper than the Pacific and their humanity is higher than the Mount Everest.They deserve all the praise!
        Blood is required in thalassemia,sickle cell anemia, leukemia,surgery,etc.So the gift of blood is precious of all.Ther are about 92 million donor world wide; and most fall in the age bracket of 25 to 44 years.Even you can find elderly donor of 65 and above with contribution of 5%.  The developing countries are far ahead in donating blood while the developed are lagging behind like other domains.Today 57 countries have achieved 100% voluntary blood donation.
      In Pakistan one million bottles of blood are required annually.Every person with 12.5 haemoglobin level can donate blood to save three precious lives.But  only 1% people donate blood creating shortfall of annual demand to 3.2 million blood units.In Pakistan donar contribution is just 20% against the projected goal of 100%  set by World Health Organization for the year 2020. In Pakistan blood donation trend is higher in urban area whereas, in villeges, many false myth are associated with blood donation.It is need of the hour to focus attention on rural area where 118.8 million(63%)population, out of total 177.1 million , resides.In villeges people prefer to buy blood instead of getting donation.A politician of Jhang told me that once he got blood of a person of his constituency.Since then ,he reminds me that he donated blood whenever he meets me,and this donation came 10 years ago.The other major reason is the rumour that man becomes impotent on donating blood.So proper couselling is required in village area to remove these doubts and practice of boosting favour conferred.The act of donating blood is a healthy process with an additional advantage of getting screened by various costly tests.Helping other should be our motto to please God!

       Once mankind used to write with feather,cane,quills,etc.then fountain pen replaced them but now ball point has revolution ed world of writing.That is why, we commemorate the 10th June as Ball Point Pen Day to pay tribute to John Loud, Biro brother ,Bich and others.The journey began in 1988,when John Loud, an American tanner,patented a roller ball tip pen.It had an ink reservoir and roller ball which applied a thin ink to leather hides.Loud's pen was never produced like 350 other patents of ball tip pens.On 10th June,1946- two Hungarian brothers Laszlo Biro and George filed first successful patent of ball point pen which is now one of the best,easiest and common writing tool.They did not created new pen rather modified the older models which had major problem of ink flow--thicker ink used to get clogged while thinner used to get leaked.This model based on capillary action unlike older gravity driven models.The tip ball acted like metal sponge thus allowing the ink to flow smoothly and allowing the user to hold pen at slant rather than straight up.

Biro was editing a small newspaper where he waisted a lot of time in filling fountain pen and cleaning up ink smudges.Further frustrated by scratchy nibs which splattered ink,tore paper or sometime get dried.He pledged with himself to make the process of writing simpler,humble and elegant.To accomplish the goal,Biro brothers replaced nib with a tiny ball.As the pen moved on the paper,the ball rolled,picking up ink from the cartridge and spreading evenly on the paper.While vacationing on the beach,they met an old man,Augustine Justo,who happened to be the president of Argentina.They showed him their ball point ,on seeing it Justo offered them to set up factory in Argentina.During the World War II,they were forced to flee and they moved to Argentina.They were so obsessed with the idea of simple writing ,they soon did away their nostalgic feeling and set up a small unit of manufacturing in 1944 and started producing ball points under name Eterpen having price 27 pounds.

Later,Biro sold his patent to Baron Marcel Bich of France for $ 2 million.In 1950 Bich launched cheap and large scale production of ball point under the name BIC(dropped 'h' from his name) and conquered the market,compelling French govt to approve its use in schools.Bich not only bought the patent but also improved its construction, made it inexpensive,non- leaky and clear barreled.

The design of ball point is now further modified.The ball is now made from Tungsten Carbide having diameter of 1mm and hardness of diamond ensuring it will neither develop pit or flatten.The barrel was made hexagonal for a better grip and has a small hole to air into the Capillary tube so the rotating ball creates only a partial vacuum,ensuring the ink flow properly.

Ball point can write ten carbon copies,can be used in water, high altitude,in space.It is light in weight,long life in use,smooth in flow,fast in speed,cheap in price.Can we pay tribute to inventors of ball points in true sense?

               14th June has been celebrated as Blood Donor Day since 2005 with a purpose to ensure the availability of safe blood and blood products for transfusion and to thanks voluntary unpaid blood donor for their life saving gift.14th June is the birthday of Karl Landsteiner,the creator of blood group system in 1900.He was later awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1930.Although Jan Jansky had classified blood into four groups but Landsteiner's discovery  had been accepted by the world scientists and Jansky's work was obscured.However,Jansky's classification is still in use in Russia and States of former USSR.

      This year theme is ;"every blood donor is hero" and thus everyone can become hero by donation blood.He said that these silent heroes lives in the hearts of 6.9 billion people ; their faces are blossoming on the face of time.as their sacrifice is deeper than the Pacific and their humanity is higher than the Mount Everest.They deserve all the praise!
        Blood is required in thalassemia,sickle cell anemia, leukemia,surgery,etc.So the gift of blood is precious of all.Ther are about 92 million donor world wide; and most fall in the age bracket of 25 to 44 years.Even you can find elderly donor of 65 and above with contribution of 5%.  The developing countries are far ahead in donating blood while the developed are lagging behind like other domains.Today 57 countries have achieved 100% voluntary blood donation.
      In Pakistan one million bottles of blood are required annually.Every person with 12.5 haemoglobin level can donate blood to save three precious lives.But  only 1% people donate blood creating shortfall of annual demand to 3.2 million blood units.In ,the  donar contribution is just 20% against the projected goal of 100%  set by World Health Organization for the year 2020. In Pakistan blood donation trend is higher in urban area whereas, in villeges, many false myth are associated with blood donation.It is need of the hour to focus attention on rural area where 118.8 million(63%)population, out of total 177.1 million , resides.In villages people prefer to buy blood instead of getting donation.A politician of Jhang told me that once he got blood of a person of his constituency.Since then ,he reminds me that he donated blood whenever he meets me,and this donation came 10 years ago.The other major reason is the rumour that man becomes impotent on donating blood.So proper counseling is required in village area to remove these doubts and practice of boosting favour conferred.The act of donating blood is a healthy process with an additional advantage of getting screened by various costly tests.Helping other should be our motto to please God!

It has completely mechanized this world and is stepping to hold nature under its thumb, but all these blessings seem to be a Pandora's box; the sidelined complications of various inventions are far more threatening than their rewards. It is rightly said: “In nature there are neither rewards nor punishments, there are only consequences”.         National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) stated that ozone layer is corroding much quicker than it was estimated by the world scientists. Here are some facts about the ozone layer and its depletion. These will help in starting the campaign against forthcoming peril and to mark World Environment Day 2012; commemorated on every 5th June to create awareness about major environmental hazards and enhance political attention and public action. This year theme is “green economy: does it include you”. Green Economy is that which improve quality of life without sacrificing environment.       What is ozone? An oxygen molecule comprises of two atoms while ozone has three atoms. Oxygen and ozone are allotropic forms, abbreviated as O2 and O3 respectively. Oxygen is a colourless and odourless while Ozone is a blue coloured, pungent smelling gas. The action of electric discharge converts oxygen to ozone but the former is more stable. Nature has provided a thick layer of ozone in upper atmosphere "stratosphere" enclosing the earth. It blocks the dangerous ultraviolet (UV) radiation (280-315nm) from reaching the earth and acts as a protective shield for the biosphere. Ozone belt is present in atmosphere between 10-30 miles from the earth. ·         The cause of depletion of ozone is due to presence of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in the atmosphere. Chlorine atom which is the part of CFCs disintegrates ozone molecules. How do Chlorine reach the ozone layer? The answer is: CFCs manage their way to the upper part of ozone layer as they remain nonreactive on the earth and lower part of ozone belt. ·         In the upper part of the belt, UV rays interact with CFCs and liberate chlorine which reacts chemically with ozone to form oxygen and chlorine-monoxide:       ClFC+O3 +U.V. rays--- ClO+ O2 This chlorine-monoxide reacts chemically and releases chlorine again. In this way just one chlorine atom destroys one lakh ozone molecules. It is evident that ozone layer can be protected if chlorine is stopped from reaching it. Chlorine maneuvers to get as far in the flying saucer of CFCs. We can say ironically that CFC stands for Chlorine's Flying Car. So the use of CFC must be restricted or abolished: there is only Hobson's choice.Other cause is spring time polar tropospheric depletion.         By 1975, the chlorine concentration was 1.4 parts per billion (ppb) now it is about 3--enough to create holes in the ozone layer. Ozone volume is declining at a rate of 4% per decade. The first hole was discovered above the South Pole and was called the Antarctic Hole with a size equal to that of USA and depth, Mount Everest can sink. In fact,G.M.B.Dobson was first to observe ozone hole in 1956.He was surprised to find 320 DU of ozone, about 150 DU below spring level but his discovery could not get the world attention. The second hole is above the Arctic Ocean.           Chlorofluorocarbons are used in billions of refrigerators and car air-conditioners of the world. They are widely used in manufacture of plastic, foam, pesticide, perfumes, aerosol spray, etc.             If countries are grouped according to the use of CFC; the first would contain the USA, former USSR, Japan, European countries etc.The second group comprises Canada,Brazil,Australia,South Africa,Pakistan,China etc.The list of third group is quite long.Once it was reported that the production of CFCs by the USA and European countries was 7,50,000 tones. Former USSR alone had a figure of 60,000 tones. This shows which countries are responsible for hanging the Sword of Damocles over the head of entire world. UNEP estimated that 7000-14000 tones of CFCs are smuggled annually to developing countries.There is 5791000 tones of CFCs in existing items.Approximately one-third of it will be emitted in next decade.          When 1% ozone layer is depleted, 2% more UV reaches earth. Ultra-violet radiation causes diseases of eyes (e.g. cataract). Some 17 million more cases of cataract are expected in near future. Skin cancers, both benign basal and squamous cell carcinomas and lethal malignant carcinoma, are linked with UV exposure, ozone depletion has increased the incidence of cancer by 2%. With 10% increase of UV, 35% melanoma cases increase. According to an estimate 60 million American born by 2075 will get skin cancer and 1 million will die. UV leads to increase ground level ozone which is toxic due to its oxidant properties. At ground level, UV interacts with vehicle exhaust gases to produce ozone. Scientists took skin biopsies of 150 whales in the Gulf of California and found acute sunburns of skin by excessive UV radiation. UV also enhances incidences of malaria and other infectious diseases; premature signs of old age and weakening of our defense mechanism against diseases.          These rays kill the plankton so all animals feeding on plankton would also die, so ocean will be hit hard. UV reduces the yield of crops. The low production of crops in Australia and the Argentina is attributed to be the effect of UV rays. Rice production depends on nitrogen fixing cyanobacteria present on their roots. These bacteria are sensitive to UV rays as a result rice crop is affected. Further wind pattern will alter thus climate will suffer a drastic change throughout the world. Unpredicted rains, nasty droughts, furious floods, animals’ migrations—all will hit mankind.             The world is striving to save the ozone belt. The advanced countries are planning to manufacture refrigerators and air-conditioners without CFC. The refrigerators already in use will be destroyed after capturing CFC. In this way, CFC will not be able to reach the atmosphere. Many alternatives of CFCs were tried. Hydro fluorocarbon HFCs are now being used in automobile air conditioners. Hydrocarbon refrigerants (a propane/isobutane blend) are used in mobile air conditioner in Australia.              The US government has enforced a law saying that refrigerators which have ceased to function normally will not be allowed to dispose off without taking possession of CFC first. In 1987, Montreal Protocol called for drastic reduction in the production of CFCs. In 1989,12 countries of European Community agreed to ban the production of CFCs by 2000.In 1990,diplomats in London voted for complete elimination of CFCs by 2000 and in 2010,CFCs should have been completely eliminated from developing countries In 2007, 200 countries agreed to accelerate the elimination of CFCs by 2020.Developing countries were given time until 2030. . Efforts are on but with no significant advancement.              Scientific analysis reveals that the CFCs already present near the ozone will remain active for a hundred years. It means if we abolish the use of CFC, the escaped CFC will continue to eat up ozone for the next hundred years.            The question arises whether nature has any arrangement for the production of ozone to compensate this loss. The answer is, yes. Ozone is produced on the earth by the interaction of sunlight and hydrocarbons. But it has a weak chemical bond and it suddenly transforms into stable oxygen. Even if it doesn't convert into oxygen, it is very difficult for ozone molecules to reach the layer. In the stratosphere, UV of 240nm interacts to produce ozone but in a quantity far less than is being destroyed. Second, UV of 300 nm disintegrates ozone. So net production is almost zero.         It is imperative to mention that chlorine used to clean water is not dangerous for ozone as it cannot reach the upper atmosphere. These chlorines and chlorides react with water and other elements to form different compounds and remain on the earth.          There are some precautionary measures which must be adopted to minimize the effect of UV rays. *During noon time, exposure to sun-rays must be avoided. *Ears must be covered by a cap or cloth to protect for the sunlight. *During peak hours of day, sunglasses (or crookes) must be used.          The abolition of use of CFC, adoption of precautionary steps, patience and perseverance are required to retrieve the lost position and a lesson to learn; “in nature there are neither rewards nor punishments, there are only consequences”.
