Why are zebra crossings white and black?
PROF WAQAR HUSSAIN
Roads are made from black tar and the easiest way to make a
patch visible was to draw white bands on the black road that can be seen easily
during the day and night. This patch having black and white bands had
resemblance with white and black strips of animal zebra so it came to be known
as zebra crossing. Otherwise, its original name was Pedestrian Crossing. Now
with the advancement of technology, people are using yellow in some places.
The reason behind
the white or black lining of zebra crossing is the visibility at day and night
and also the convenience of just painting a white band on the already black
road.
